The sitting after reviewing the findings of the committee set up on the allegations of corruption leveled against the governor by the EFCC, headed by Deputy Speaker, Usman Zumunta concluded that the allegations were too grave to be swept aside, adopting the findings and consequently rejected the report of another committee on the same subject earlier constituted.
The allegations bordered on how the governor was arrested for money laundering offence in London, his eventual jumping of bail, false declaration of assets, and misappropriation of that state funds. The lawmakers concluded that the governor had breached the constitution in view of the allegation, and therefore had a case to answer.
But during the proceedings of the day, an appeal was made by two members, Azi and Pam Dongs that Dapialong decision as the speaker was 544rrundemocratic. Their appeal was overruled by the substantive speaker, which made the duo to walk out of the legislative chamber before the end of the proceedings.
The legislators who were earlier detained by the EFCC before appearing in the state went straight back to Abuja with the Assembly mace after conclusion of the days proceeding.
However, the state government has called the sitting as a joke, unconstitutional, citing that the eight legislators does not form a quorum unlike the case of Ekiti state, describing the whole show as a kangaroo arrangement.
What the outcome of the latest face of between the governors and their various state legislators will be is not far-fetched but whatever happens we hope it would not destabilize the political landscape vis-à-vis the planning towards the forthcoming general elections in 2007.
