Podcaster Frank Felker, operating from a windowless 10 x 10 room in his basement reaches entrepreneurs around the world via Radio Free Enterprise and The Official BNI Podcast.
Businesspeople wondering how Web 2.0 can help them communicate their company's message to a worldwide audience need look no further than a small windowless room tucked away in the basement of a modest split level home in Springfield, Virginia.
There, surrounded by computer screens and audio equipment, local entrepreneur Frank Felker is producing Internet radio shows known as podcasts which are being tuned into by listeners from coast to coast and from Bejing to Dubai.
He said, "I am amazed every day when I read the statistics showing where Radio Free Enterprise listeners are coming from. Folks from Malaysia, Pakistan, Ireland, Nigeria, Bulgaria, Brazil, Morocco and the Islamic Republic of Iran are joining visitors from U.S. locations ranging from Honolulu to Concord, New Hampshire."
Felker learned the craft of podcasting by repurposing episodes of a weekend real estate radio show that he produced and co-hosted on WJFK and WMAL from September 2004 through June 2006. In late 2006 he began producing Radio Free Enterprise, a series of information audios and interviews targeted at current and would-be owners of small and mid-size businesses.
But his biggest break and largest audience came in February 2007 when he persuaded Dr. Ivan Misner, the Founder and Chairman of the world's largest business networking organization, BNI, that a weekly podcast was the perfect way for Misner to maintain a consistent and personal level of communication with nearly 100,000 BNI members in 37 countries worldwide.
"I see this podcast as a way for me to flatten the communication hierarchy," Dr. Misner continues. "It allows me to communicate directly to members and directors worldwide on a weekly basis, and lets them respond with their comments and questions right on the web site."
Despite his packed calendar and demanding travel schedule, which takes him around the world on an annual basis, Felker's home studio set-up allows Dr. Misner to record the podcasts by telephone from anywhere. In just the first month of production, Dr. Misner has called in to Frank's house from Upland, California, Stockholm, Sweden and Lisbon Portugal.
As for his future in podcasting, Felker says the sky's the limit. "Now that I have over 100 podcasts under my belt for three different shows, I've got the production and promotion down to a science. I've found a great medium, now I'm looking for new messages and markets to reach. There are innumerable companies, associations and membership organizations who can benefit from the power of podcasting. I'm ready to help them in any way I can."
